Embracing change

Peter Jacobson, managing director, NGI Solutions, USA, outlines what delegates at Post-Expo Latin America 2013 will learn from his presentation on the important role technology plays in the postal industry

What will you cover in your presentation at Post-Expo Latin America and why did you choose this topic?
There is no shortage of technology options available to postal operators, and new and more innovative solutions are being introduced at an ever-accelerating rate. And there are more opportunities to spend money today than ever before. While the selection of the “right” technology is challenging and calculating the full payback has often proven difficult, the real task is seamlessly implementing the new technology into the organisation through a series of systematic engagements with customers, employees and technology providers.

What can delegates hope to learn by attending the event?
In recent years, the world of postal operators has changed rapidly across the globe. Digital commerce has produced new product offerings and services which can and are having a direct effect on business development in Latin America. The speakers scheduled at the Post-Expo bring with them the most current insights, trends, technologies and developments from posts across the globe. Exploring these insights will enable the Latin American postal operators to consider new and innovative strategic directions for their posts.

Why is it important to attend industry events such as Post-Expo Latin America?
This event brings together a broad range of speakers, delegates and exhibitors who understand how posts are currently dealing with the effects of the changing face of postal operators worldwide. The first-hand experiences that global posts have had in this changing environment may suggest innovative solutions that might be used to create business opportunities for all of the attendees at the Post-Expo Latin America. The benefits of having a forum to discuss the changing postal world are significant for everyone.

What else are you looking forward to seeing at the conference/exhibition?
One of the best demonstrations of the innovative solutions developed as a result of a changing postal environment is to actually see some of the new technology on display in the Exhibition Hall. The exhibitors that will be on the hall floor are all leaders in their own postal niche when it comes to technological solutions in support of new postal products and services. Demonstrations of these technological solutions that actually address the changing postal landscape will be invaluable to all attendees. In addition, face-to-face communications with our postal colleagues is beneficial.

What challenges is the industry facing in the Latin American market?
The Latin American market, like much of the rest of the world, is seeing online buying grow as internet penetration increases and traditional mail erodes. With these changes, existing infrastructure is often less efficient to the business needs of eCommerce shipments. Compounding this situation are the demanding and often diverse and dynamic needs of the mobile customer. Of the ten top Global eCommerce leaders, four are in Latin America, which may mean more competition from neighbouring countries.

How can these challenges be overcome?
There is no simple answer to overcoming to today’s challenges. All postal operators must have a vision of their business and a strategy to carry it out. The key is having a successful and well thought out vision – one that looks beyond today’s infrastructure, people, financial and operational problems to one that focuses on the customer – to a vision and strategy that is designed to not only follow the customer in the midterm, but to lead the customer and anticipate what is necessary to satisfy the needs of tomorrow’s customer.

Peter will present Integrating flexible technology solutions through successful systems engagement at 10:30am on Wednesday 17 April at Post-Expo Latin America 2013 in Brasilia, Brazil. For more information on the event, including the full conference programme and how to register, please click here
